In my third year as an undergrad, I was very unhappy in my hostel room throughout the semester.
This is because I had a roommate who was constantly on my nerves.
She was a pain in the butt for real, and with time, I began to dread going back to the room,
I’d stay for longer than necessary in class under the guise of studying just because I wanted to avoid facing my unhappy room situation.
It wasn’t long until it began to affect my mental health and even my academics.
If staying in an unhappy room could affect the quality of my life that much, then imagine what staying in an unhappy marriage does to you.
We will look into some of the consequences of staying in that unhappy marriage.
14 Consequences Of Staying In An Unhappy Marriage

1. You will be unhappy for a long time
Staying in an unhappy marriage makes you an unhappy person; it’s really that simple.
No matter how much you try to compartmentalize your life and isolate your marital dissatisfaction from other areas of your life, the truth is that it’s only a matter of time before it spills into them.
You really can’t separate them for long.
With time, you will observe that you are an unhappy person, and it’s directly traceable to the state of your marriage.
The overall quality of your life and experiences drops, and misery may set in.
2. Resentment
When couples are unhappy in their marriage, I always recommend seeking help immediately; if it’s unbearable, they may need to separate.
The truth is that separation may not be a good thing, but on the flip side, when you think about it, if they insist on remaining in that unhappy marriage, they are creating the opportunity for more unhealthy feelings to grow.
Emotions like anger or even hatred may begin to brood in their hearts, leading to resentment and further straining the relationship.
3. You gradually lose yourself
Remaining in an unhappy marriage has varying effects on you; one of them is that you may begin to lose yourself.
This is because the situation you’re in is unhealthy and is bad for growth.
An unhappy marriage drains you and makes you a shadow of yourself.
You become less vibrant, happy, and productive, and you may even begin to receive comments from people about the decline in your physical appearance.
4. The marriage is not maximized
So many possibilities and potentials can be explored when a marriage is happy and healthy.
The individuals in it can grow, and experience fulfillment in many ways, and the connection and progress of that marriage grows.
But this is not the case in an unhappy marriage.
It’s almost as though precious time is wasted because no substantial progress is made.
At some point, you’d begin to wonder what the whole point is.
5. Emotional detachment
If the marriage is unhappy, what do you think would happen to the emotional connection between the couple?
Of course, it will be eroded.
Because of the absence of joy, the partners will become emotionally detached from each other over time.
The inevitable result of this is feelings of loneliness and isolation.
6. You become more resilient
This one has two sides to it.
There’s a positive side to it, and it is that the length of time you spend in that marriage may teach you how to handle tough situations.
Because you’ve refused to leave that marriage even though it doesn’t bring you joy, you learn resilience and how to work things out.
It may be an advantage as it may lead to you and your partner seeking healthier alternatives to divorce.
It may also provide an opportunity for personal growth and the development of coping mechanisms that can improve the relationship or prepare you for a healthier relationship in the future.
But there’s another side to this that leaves negative consequences.
Marriage isn’t meant to be a war zone or a training ground that teaches you hard lessons.
The idea that going into marriage is like going into some sort of training ground, so you have to stay even when it’s unbearable, is largely flawed.
Also, when you stay in an unhappy marriage for too long, you may subconsciously begin to subscribe to and agree with the hard life.
You may subtly begin to believe that life is generally unhappy and things always have to be difficult.
You keep putting up with the unhappiness because you think it’s making you a better person, meanwhile, it’s not.
So, considering these two facets, there must be a limit to the time spent in such an environment.
Like someone once humorously said, “I don’t want to go through things that don’t kill me but make me stronger anymore.”

7. Increased stress and low productivity
When you stay in an unhappy marriage for a while, it increases your stress levels.
You may be out all day and have the time of your life, but when you return home to your partner and your marriage, it’s as if all the happy energy remains outside and doesn’t come in with you.
It becomes almost unbearable, living in a constant state of unhappiness and conflict that leads to elevated stress levels, and this can negatively impact your physical and mental health over time.
Another possible offshoot is that you cannot achieve as much as you would have in your life if you weren’t in that situation.
This can leave you feeling dissatisfied with life and craving fulfillment.
8. Adopting unhealthy habits
You will naturally begin to look for coping mechanisms because you have chosen to remain in the situation even though it’s not serving you.
Unhappiness is not an emotion humans were designed to live with and enjoy.
And so, after enduring for a while, you will soon begin to adopt habits and lifestyles that make it easier for you to cope.
People in such situations turn to different unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse or overeating, which, of course, will further affect their health and well-being.
9. Physical intimacy issues
Wouldn’t it be ironic to expect some “happy time” in the bedroom if the marriage is unhappy?
It’s just very unlikely to happen.
A direct consequence of the unhappiness can be a lack of physical intimacy.
The couple do not bond emotionally, and they do not connect physically either.
10. It gets tougher
One sad thing about staying in an unhappy relationship is that things are only likely to worsen.
Sitting back in the situation without stepping forward or backward will inevitably take you backward.
What is likely to happen is that communication will reduce, and conflict will increase.
It becomes even more difficult to resolve issues; the longer things remain like this, the worse it gets.
11. Financial strain
“Am I not saving money by remaining in an unhappy marriage? I mean, opting for divorce is what is likely to stress me financially,” you may say.
While you have a point and divorce can be financially costly, staying in an unhappy marriage is also expensive,
It will cost you in many ways, including financially.
Depending on how things go, you may have to deal with legal fees, lost income from time spent dealing with marital issues, decreased productivity at work, and even therapy costs.
You may not observe this immediately because you do not see the financial losses plainly as you would in a divorce, but make no mistakes; it is there.
12. The ripple effect
When a significant portion of life, such as marriage, is a source of unhappiness, it creates a ripple effect.
An unhappy marriage’s stress and emotional turmoil can spill over into your work, leading to decreased productivity and career dissatisfaction.
If children are involved in the marriage, they get a slice of the emotional distress, and this can cause behavioral problems and challenges in forming healthy relationships in the future.
Unhappiness in a marriage may also affect the extended family, friends, and loved ones around, creating tension and stress in those relationships.
Bringing it back to the individuals directly involved, the couple may experience issues like low self-esteem and lack of confidence.
13. Infidelity is at the door
One may think you’re doing the marriage well by remaining in it even though it is unhappy, but on the contrary, you may be doing the opposite.
Unhappiness and lack of emotional connection in a marriage can increase the risk of infidelity.
The lack of joy and harmony can make one or both partners seek emotional or physical intimacy outside the marriage.
14. Isolation
When you stay in an unhappy marriage long enough, you may begin to notice things about yourself that you didn’t know could happen and it’s hardly ever positive.
One of those things is that you may begin to isolate yourself from your friends and loved ones.
Many individuals who remain in unhappy marriages for a long time tend to withdraw from their other important relationships.
They do so, possibly because they do not want to involve others in their misery.
They don’t want to disclose their marital problems to their friends and family, but in the end, it only makes the situation worse.
The disadvantages of staying in an unhappy marriage are many.
But this doesn’t mean that if you are unhappy in your marriage immediately, you should seek its annulment.
Far from it.
What couples in such a situation need to do is seek resolution by exploring things like counseling, therapy, and so on.
Divorce should only be considered when it’s life-threatening or the only option left.
